Tank Secondary Containment for Fuel and Chemical Storage
A leaking valve, a cracked fitting, or a failed tank wall can release thousands of gallons before anyone notices.
Tank secondary containment holds that liquid in place so it never reaches soil, drains, or groundwater. Polystar’s tank secondary containment systems surround aboveground fuel tanks, chemical tanks, totes, and drums. The walls go up without excavation or poured concrete, so your storage area meets its spill prevention requirements without months of site work.

Poly Dike MPE® Portable Tank Containment Berms
Poly Dike MPE® walls replace concrete dikes around storage tanks. Each wall section is roto-molded from linear low density polyethylene with a UV stabilizer. Wall struts tie together with optional heavy-duty cabling for added strength. After the walls are assembled, a reinforced liner is laid across the system and locked into place to create a fully enclosed containment area.
Standard wall heights are 12, 24, and 36 inches, plus 48 inches with a 12-inch riser. Taller walls hold more volume in a smaller footprint, which helps on tight pads where tanks sit close to buildings or property lines. Because the walls are not anchored to the ground, Poly Dike MPE is also a practical choice for portable tank containment berms at temporary tank farms, tank change-outs, and leased storage sites. Sections nest together for shipping and storage between uses.

Envirohut™ Tank and Drum Containment
Envirohut™ is a one-piece, non-porous containment unit. It is built from heavy-duty fiberglass laminations that fully encapsulate a steel core. The standard unit measures 8 feet wide by 12 feet long with a 12-inch wall and holds 700 gallons, which fits small fuel tanks, drums, and IBC totes. Custom wall heights are available.
Each Envirohut includes:
- Four 1-1/2″ threaded couplings with two bronze ball valves for drainage
- Two removable pedestal frames that raise equipment off the containment floor
- A 2-inch divider wall that keeps minor spills in one half of the unit
- Open ends for full access to stored equipment
An optional 10-foot canopy mounts directly to the unit to keep rainwater out in high-precipitation climates. Because Envirohut is one piece, a forklift can relocate it without disassembly. See the full
Envirohut™ specifications.
How to Size Tank Secondary Containment
Capacity drives every tank containment decision. Many facilities size tank secondary containment to hold 110% of the largest container’s volume, which covers the full tank plus a margin for rainfall. Your facility’s
SPCC plan requirements set the exact number for your site, along with any state or local rules.
To estimate the wall height and footprint your tanks need, run your dimensions through our
secondary containment calculator. Then send the results to our team, and we will design a layout around your tank sizes, spacing, and site conditions.
Chemical Storage Tank Containment
Chemical storage tank containment adds one more variable: compatibility. With Poly Dike MPE, the liner is the surface in contact with the stored product, so it is selected to match the chemical. Envirohut’s fiberglass and steel construction suits fuels, oils, and many industrial liquids. Share your safety data sheets with us, and we will confirm the right materials before anything ships. For guidance on storing hazardous liquids, read our article on

IBC Tote Containment Systems
Totes and drums need the same protection as bulk tanks, often in tighter spaces. Envirohut units and short Poly Dike MPE walls both serve as IBC tote containment systems for warehouses, loading docks, and outdoor storage yards. Explore our dedicated
IBC tote containment solutions for more options.
Built and Engineered in the USA
Polystar manufactures every tank secondary containment system in the USA and customizes it to your application. Polyethylene and fiberglass construction will not rust or spall the way steel and concrete can. Modular designs let you expand, reconfigure, or relocate containment as your tank inventory changes. When standard sections cannot cover your layout, our team can build custom corners, heights, and configurations.

Frequently Asked Questions About Tank Secondary Containment
What wall height do I need for tank secondary containment?
It depends on the volume you need to hold and the space around your tanks. A taller wall holds the same volume in a smaller footprint. Poly Dike MPE walls come in 12, 24, 36, and 48-inch heights. Our secondary containment calculator can help you compare options before you request a quote.
Can containment be installed around tanks that are already in place?
Yes. Poly Dike MPE walls assemble in sections on the existing surface. Tanks do not need to be moved, and no excavation or concrete work is required.
Is modular tank containment an alternative to a concrete dike?
For many sites, yes. Modular polyethylene and fiberglass systems go up without forming, pouring, or curing time, and they can be relocated or expanded later. A concrete dike stays where it is poured.
Can an Envirohut be moved after installation?
Yes. Envirohut is a single fiberglass and steel unit, so a forklift can move it to a new location without taking it apart.
